Uses

  • Visual arts : Painting, glazing, frescoes, fine arts.

  • Decoration : Limewash, coatings, waxes, plasters, cements.

  • Specific applications : Swedish paint, ceramics.

Preparation and mixing

  • Linseed Oil : Dissolve the pigment in a little turpentine before incorporating it into the oil for an even texture.

  • Water-based paint or lime paste : Dilute the powder in a small amount of water to make it fluid before adding it to the preparation.

  • Powdered lime, cement, plaster : Add directly up to 10% of the binder weight, mixing thoroughly for even coloring.

  • Artistic paint : Grind finely in a mortar before mixing with the binder for optimal results.

Dosage

  • Recommendation : Maximum 10% of the binder weight. Beyond this, add fixatives or additives (especially for lime).

  • Example : In a lime wash (Badisof Plus type), use 50 g of pigment per kg (5%) for a subtle tone, or 200 g per kg (20%) for a more intense color.

Colors

Dark gray tending toward blue with a transparent binder. With a white binder, Ivory Black gives a beautiful anthracite.

Advice

  • Lightening : To soften the shade, mix with Tiona White before incorporating into a transparent binder (linseed oil, wax, acrylic binder).

  • Variable rendering : The final shade may vary depending on the amount of titanium dioxide (white pigment) in the white base used.

Origin and composition

  • Manufacturing : Produced in France, this pigment is made from iron oxide and vegetable charcoal from a French sawmill, guaranteeing an environmentally friendly approach.

  • History : Initially obtained by calcining animal bones, Ivory Black was reformulated in 2016 and improved in 2021 to offer a 97% natural alternative, while retaining its iconic shade.
